Question
Hi, Guy.I just went to my first hockey game and did't know alot of things they said.Like, icing, goal tending, slapshot, I can't think what else. Could you please tell me ALL the common terminology used to help me understand my next game so I won't feel so foolish. By the way my team won. Also, if they tie at the end of the game do they go into overtime ? For how long ? Only 1 point per goal ?
Just tell me anything you think a beginner fan should know. Thanks alot for your help, and HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU
If you'd like to just e-mail me direct that would be ok.

Answer
Hi Linda,

I'm glad to hear you attended your first game and enjoyed it to want to go back.

There are many, many terms for hockey that would take a while to list. But I found a sight that has all of the main terms on that you can visit. http://www.geocities.com/colosseum/court/5031/Hockey_101.html
Their are two rule changes that have occurred since this was posted.

For icing, they have added the rule that the team that iced the puck cannot change the players that were on the ice. The teams used to ice it so they could get a whistle and change, so this rule was added to prevent that and help reduce whistles and continue the flow of the game.

The other rule that is changed is the offsides-two line passing. They now allow 2 line passing to open up more scoring opportunities and bring some excitement to the game.

Regarding overtime, it is a 5 minute 4 on 4. Each team is guaranteed 1 point, and the winner gets an extra point, so 2 total. If it is still tied after the 5 minutes, the go to a 3 man shootout. If after that, they are still tied, then it is a sudden death shootout. Each goal is worth 1.

If you have any more questions or would like more of an explanation of any of the terms or rules found on the website, feel free to ask me and I will gladly help you out.

Thanks for your support and attending of games!!

Guy
