Hockey PLUS/MINUS stat

2016/7/16 9:38:23

Question
At what level, what age does plus/minus stat become a relevant stat or tool to use as a coach?

Answer
Hi Chris...

This is always a "fun" stat to play with, as the kids can easily be motivated by this - even if they are not scoring too much!

However as a tool for coaches to use to determine where (which lines or which players) could use help, is when you begin to introduce SYSTEM play to your players (breakouts, forechecks etc.).  That will typically begin with relevance to the game at (in my personal opinion) around the elite levels of 8 year olds and older, or rec levels of 12 and over...

The kids need to understand the game at comfortable levels - and must be used in spirit of development and fun...  (as opposed to reprimands).

I hope this makes sense.

Feel free to follow up with any questions...

Thanks

Good luck with the puck!
