Iditarod Rules: Reporting & Handling Edible Game Kills in Self-Defense

According to the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Official Rules, in the event that a musher kills a moose, caribou, musk ox, or bear in defense of life or property and the meat is later determined to be edible, the musher must:

1. Immediately report the incident to the nearest Iditarod official or checkpoint and surrender the meat to that official.

2. Complete the current race stage within the elapsed time limit.

3. Appear before the Iditarod Race Marshal for an interview.

4. Face potential disqualification from the race if the Race Marshal determines that the edible big game animal was not killed in defense of life or property.
