Transition from Scrum-Half to Fly-Half

2016/7/16 9:54:59

Question
I'm 17 years old and I play rugby in the US. I relatively new to the game,i converted over from Soccer and American Football and I've only been playing rugby for a year. I have only played Scrum-Half for sevens rugby, but now I want to make the transition to fifteens rugby as a Fly-Half because of kicking. I'm a decent passer with my strong hand but I'm lacking with my weaker hand. What are some drills that I can do alone that can help me improve on passing accurately with both hands and more importantly, passing accurately at pace? Some tips would be helpful as well. Also, I'm 5ft 7 1/2in(171.45 cm) and 167 lbs(75.7kg), slightly stocky, but fast, quick, and agile. Is the switch from Scrum-half to Fly-half a good decision and is my height and weight good for a fly-half? Thank You for your time.

Answer
Hi Ken,

Height and weight really do not mean a lot. I suggest staying at half back unless you are super confident of your skills with kicking and passing AND if you feel you have the ability to play a heads-up game and make qucik decisons under pressure. Fly half is basically a captain position - you must be confident in your ability to take control of the back line, make judgement calls and decide how to best find a weekness in the opposition defense.

If you are all that then go to 10 if not stay at 9 until you are more aware of the game.
