Question
What is the term in Rugby when 2 sets of forwards mass together around the ball, and with their heads down, they try to should their opponents off the ball and kick it to their own team?  Thank you

Answer
Ma'am,

You are referring to the scrum.  It is used when there is a minor infraction of the laws (as opposed to a penalty kick for a major infraction of the laws), or the ball becomes unplayable, generally from a maul or a ruck.

Technically the purpose of the scrum restart play with one team pushing the other team off of the ball.  That is very difficult, so the hook was developed.  The middle player on the front row is known as the 揾ooker?because he hooks the ball when it is put in.  He hooks, or taps, the ball back to his own players through the scrum to the eight-man (last man in the scrum).  From this position, the scrum half (similar to the quarterback) can play the ball.

Thank you,
