Baseball Rule: Fair Ball & Force Out - Understanding the Call
Question
A player was on third base and a ball hit the runner. However, the runner didn't move and stayed on the base. The umpire said it was a fair ball and the infielder threw the ball home to get the force out. The other team argued saying it was a dead ball single. What's the call?
Answer
Hi Kelsy,
It depends on what org you play in.
If you play ASA it also depends on where the closest fielder was playing. If they were playing behind the base it is a dead ball, b-r is awarded 1st and other runners move only if forced.
If the defense is in front of the bag, it continues to be a live ball.
utrip and nsa each have different rules and they are not the same. so 3 orgs, 3 different rules. If you play either of the others write me back and I'll look it up for you.
