Umpire judgment

Question
We had an umpire (working single person) get out from behind the plate to make a call at third.  However, them umpire had a poor angle and really couldn't see the tag.

He as the third baseman if he tagged the player and the player, of course, said, "Yes" and the runner was then called out.  Can the offensive team appeal this decision?

What should the ump have done in this situation?

Answer
Hi Pete,

We don't normally call someone out w/out seeing the actual tag.  If I don't see the tag for whatever reason it's almost always a safe.  I would never ask a player what the outcome was either, that's poor umpiring!

I don't know if you could protest it or not but you could try.  remember you must protest it at the time, it's too late now.
