error on a bunt


Question
Our batter laid down a bunt. The 1st baseman fielded the bunt and threw it into right field. Our scorer (and i agree) gave the batter a fielders choice. Her parents are saying she should still receive a sacrifice. What is the correct scoring.

Hello Richart,

You don't typically score a fielders choice on plays made at first on the batter.  The only time that is scored as a fielders choice is when runners advance due to the catcher making a play on the batter following a dropped third strike.  The fielders choice scoring is normally made when plays are made on preceding runners.  If the bunt was made with the intention of advancing runners then a sacrifice is the correct ruling.  If not then it is just scored as an error on the first baseman.  Below is a link to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association website which will give you scoring information on almost all scenarios.  Please let me know if you have any other questions:
