Bringing outfielders in on the grass?

In our league, we have a number of young players who cannot hit the ball very far. So, our team brought our outfielders into the edge of the infield on the "dirt" behind the bases for a particular batter.

The other team protested and said we couldn't do that that the outfielders had to remain in the grass. I know that this is not a rule specific to our league and I was not aware of any such rule for softball, but to avoid an argument, we had our outfielders remain on the grass.

Is there a rule regarding where you have to position your outfielder or for that matter your infielders (except for the pitcher and catcher of course).

Hi Phillip,

If it's a non-co-ed game there are no requirements for positions where players must play, except everyone (except the catcher) must be in fair territory.

I gave you the answer so I'm allowed a thought...competition is a good thing but sometimes it can be overdone particularly at our lower levels where players need to succeed if they are to stay with the game over the long haul.
