COACHING A LEAGUE

Question
This is my 3rd year coaching for a youth league. I have a great team this time with potential. I have a issue of letting their inner aggressiveness come out and communication. I have a few that are shy. How can i get them to bond faster ? ive tried psychological games and exercises that arent so blunt also have them chose who their most comfortable with to play next to so they trust each other more on the court. Its worked so far but i feel like their height can be utilized even more so

Answer
Hello Cynthia and welcome to www.AllExperts.com

My name is Coach Tovar

To make sure that all my readers young and old can understand some of my comments, I have chosen to use simple vocabulary words and interpret the rule for this sole purpose.

Well Cynthia I can surely attest that I used to coach very young teams for over 9 years or so when I volunteered for a very recognized organization. If this is the case then you will have no power over your team. If you are the main person who can make most of the decisions or final decisions then this answer is for you.

Make an example and get rid of those students that have made it impossible for other kids to come out and show you what they are really made out of. Make a meeting with all the parents where they hear your rules and the consequences for not following those rules. Make sure the kids or players are also present. Read out the rules in front of everyone and take that extra time to give examples on those rules you feel more strongly about.

"The number of weapons on your team will depend on how well you get to know each and every player on your team" Tovar - The kids will never let you see this side of them if they feel threatened that another child is going to make fun of them and the coach will allow this with minimal feedback. Do what's best for the team which means make sure everyone plays and haves fun. Do this by weaving out those who feel that this is their team because they can see that they are better than everyone else.

The most important thing you want kids to remember is that this is your team and that only certain behaviors will be allowed, basically always say something positive on a missed serve, bump, hit, set or anything that resembles a mistake. This includes unwanted facial expressions. Don't let students get into their little groups. This will cause chaos on how the team plays. All students should never realign themselves in order for you to speak. "Get rid of the small clicks or groups while you talk".

I have sat players down for the entire practice until they have though hard that this is not their team, it is everyone's team. If this happens three times then I have to get rid of them. I document the activity, talk to the player, talk to the parents and then get rid of the student. Even though building positive social interactions is a very important part of sports, sometimes you have to make hard decisions. If kids don't believe that you will ever get rid of your best players, then they will never believe in you or your program.

You can always give that particular player a second chance. I have released a lot of excellent players due to their behavior and or social interactions with the rest of the team. You are the coach. Let them know you are in charge and what you expect is a fun, challenging, positive, and safe experience in your program.

I hope this answers your question. Please take the time to rate me. Any feedback you can provide for me will be great.
