Hitting arm pain

Question
Hello,

I have been playing volleyball for about 10 years now. I am 24 years old and usually play only recreational volleyball.  My question is more of a sports related injury question.  This happened about approximatley one year ago.  One day when I was playing volleyball, I did not do a proper warm-up with my arms.  I partnered up with a partner and we began serving the ball to each other across the net.  This is when my right upper arm (which is my hitting arm) began to develop some pain.  It is the part of the arm right below the shoulder.  I feel like I my have strained or teared something.  I had advised my coach about this and she said it was probably due to an improper warm-up.  So now when I play i try and warmup my arm as best as I can, but I still feel pain when I serve and especially when I hit the ball.  Just recently I felt a pain that I had not felt before, when I approached to the hit the ball as an outside hitter, I hit the ball and I felt the pain on my upper arm, but also felt like a vibrating shock throughout my arm.  This was a new pain that I had not felt.  What type of recommendations would you make to properly warm-up my arm?  What type of specialist could I see so that I can see what is wrong with my arm?  Any information would help.

Thank you.

Answer
Vanessa,

This sounds like a rotator cuff injury.  If you feel pain you need to see a doctor.  Have the school send you or go to a doctor who can give you an MRI.  My spelling will be off but you need to see an orthopedic doctor.  I would also stop playing until I saw someone.

Good luck,
Steve
