Old Fishing rod in mint condition

Question
I have a wooden rod in a green fabric case.  The case says True Temper in red, and has the original tag on it (albeit peeling) the label says 'True Temper Fishing Rods.  No 610 81/2 With a hand written price of $30.00

The rod itself is wood of some kind, with the words 'Heddon Pal Standard #30 Trout 8 1/2' D-HDH.  The cork has clear hard plastic around it that says Heddon on it in red, with 'remove before using' around one end.
One half of the rod is sleeved within a shiny metal tube, with cork at one end.

What can you tell me about this?  How old is it, and what is the best reel to attach to it, if any?

Answer
Hi Angela,

The case and the rod did not come together as a set originally.  Someone in the past has located a case that will fit the rod and put the two together.  This may or may not be true also about the metal tube (probably aluminum) that holds one half of the rod, probably the tip section.  I am not certain as to whether or not this tube was original equipment sold with the rod.

The Heddon Pal Standard #30 Trout 8 1/2 D-HDH was made in the last half of the 1950s.  This is a fiberglass fly rod that is made to appear as if it wooden with paint techniques.  The D-HDH indicates a 6wt fly line in modern terms...specifically, the "D" refers to a Level Line 6wt; the "HDH" refers to a Weight Forward 6wt or a Double Taper 6wt fly line.

This is one of Heddon's initial models offered in fiberglass after 1954.  Value on the rod in Mint condition should be in the $60-$80 range...possibly more if you find the right collector to but it.

Any fly reel will work.  For something of the same period you light look for an older Pfleuger, Heddon, South Bend or similar reel.

Thanks,  Joe
