LL Bean Fiberglass Rod

Question
QUESTION: I picked up a mint LL Bean 8.6 ft. fiberglass rod (just missing the fighting butt). I want to fish it but am curious about value, and line weight. It has the circle hookkeeper and a golden metal reel seat. Thanks! BP

ANSWER: Hi Billy,

With the missing piece, this rod is likely to be vlaued in the $30-$50 range.  Line weight would probably be 6wt or 7wt.   Most of the older fiberglass fly rods tend toward the 7wt line.

Thanks,  Joe

QUESTION: Had fun making a fighting butt for it but guess I paid a little too much. Does it need TLC while fishing it?

Answer
Hi Billy,

Price is always subjective and you are looking at the actual rod, so your assessment is what counts as to whether or not you paid a fair price.  If the rod works well for you, you will surely get your money's worth out of it.

As long as there are no visible cracks or damage to the rod shaft, you should have no problems fishing the rod.  Fiberglass is pretty durable stuff and a rod in mint condition should be just fine.

Thanks,  Joe
