Restringing a spinning rod

Question
I have tried to re-string my fishing pole on my own, but when I give my pole slack it just starts to unravel. Do you think I'm reeling it on to tight or adding too much or something else..?

Answer
Hi Justine,

It could be a couple things.  Yes, you may have put too much line on.  You should only fill them to 1/8th inch from the edge of the spool.

Second, you may have chosen a line with a lot of "memory".  Memory means that it retains the loops that it acquired by being on the spool.  Many lines now have "low memory", meaning that they come off the spool and are limp and don't keep loops in them.  Some lines just need to be used or gotten wet to loose some of that "slinky" characteristic to them.  Cold weather can make them worse.  There are some lines that just don't work well on spinning reels.

Or third, you may have too heavy of a line on your reel.  After about 14 pound test, some lines don't work well on some spinning reels.

Try using it and see if it relaxes a bit.  Otherwise I'd recommend a low memory line like Suffix Siege, Trilene XL, or the original Stren.

One last possibility is that you wound it on wrong.  When you are windin line on a spinning reel (spool lying flat on a table) there is a right side and a wrong side.  On the right side the line will come off in nice large relaxed loops.  On the wrong side, it will double and triple up the loops and get very unruly.

Good Luck,

Marc
