Identifying and Valuing Vintage Martin Blue Chip Fly Rods

Question
Joe,
I have a pristine Martin "Blue Chip" fly rod Model 73-437 8wt. I would like to know some history on it like when it was made, material, value, etc. I did contact Martin / Zebco and they did not have any records for it since they only took over the comapny 20 years ago. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Wayne,

I assume this is a fiberglass rod or early graphite rod.  I don't have any information on Martin rods or a listing for the model in any of my reference materials.  Typically, the older glass and graphite rods, even in mint condition don't have a lot of collector value.  Martin rods and reels are not real high dollar products, but they do certainly work well.  I would probably price this rod at about $40 in my shop and be willing to negotiate as needed to sell it.

Thanks,  Joe
