montague bamboo spinning

Question
My uncle has a Montague bamboo spinning rod 6ft in two pieces that he bought as a boy. He watched the rod builder make it for him sometime in the 40's. He has taken very good care of it and it looks almost brand new. What do the rods go for now on the antique rod market? I don't think that Montague made very many spinning rods out of bamboo.

Answer
Hi Steven,

Montague made lots of bamboo spinning and casting rods, but certainly nowhere near the number of fly rods that were made in their factory.  A spinning rod in Excellent-Mint condition would be valued in the $150-$175 range.  This one would be especially interesting to collectors since your uncle was able to watch the rod being made and is the original owner.

Sounds like a very nice rod.

Thanks, Joe
