Antique Bristol Metal Fly Rod: Identification & Value
Question
Hello, My husband has an antique Bristol 6 sided metal fly rod, it is about 10 feet long and very strong and nicely made. It is in 4 sections and has little s shaped line guides. It has a cork handle and Bristol is stamped on the metal above it. We wonder if it is really a fly rod or a pole for fishing in swamps where you cant get close to the water? And what might it be worth? I looked on ebay but couldnt find any old rods! Thanks very much! Annie
Answer
Annie,
these were used for fly fishing, used on lakes and rivers. They are pretty common and appear often on ebay (sporting goods, fishing, vintage or fly fishing). Usually there is paint scrapped, bent eyes and distress to the cork.
In near mint condition they run $50, but usually they have wear, and run around $10.
The main collector interest is in split bamboo flyrods made in American. Custom built rods command the top dollar 100s to 1000s.
