Identifying Your Vintage Betts Fly Rod: Model, Line Weight & History
Question
I have an old fly rod I recently purchased. It has a decal witha red and green background. On one end there is a bass jumping out of the water. The decal says "Betts" in bold letters and the "FISHING TACKLE" "No 30F" and then underneath in small print "Betts Mfg CO Detroit" and then it looks like a number followed by "Michigan". I'm trying to restore it, it's in fairly good shape but I'd like to know as much as I can about it, particularly what line weight it's rated for. Thanks in advance for your help. Mark
Answer
Hi Mark,
I am not the old-rods expert on this site. Run this past Joe Douglas and you will get a wealth of knowledge from him.
I do know that Betts is still in business selling flys and poppers and things like that. (bettstackle@bettstackle.net) They may have some history for you.
If that 30 "F" is correct, the "F" is the old letter designation which converts to the modern 4 weight.
I hope Joe can help you.
Good luck,
Marc
