winding check on fly rod

Question

winding check
Hi, Rich,

I am a novice rod builder and have a question on winding check. I am using something as in the attached picture.

To install it, should I let the smaller side
face rod tip direction or should I snug the smaller side inside of the grip? I am using a half-well grip.

Another option is to omit this winding check but just in case that I couldn't ream the grip opening perfectly.

Also, where to install the trim ring? It comes with the reel seat but I don't see any use of it.

Answer
Tiger,
Its a personal choice on heads or tails for the winding check - I would go for the tightest fit - with glue it keeps water out from under your handle. You can't do it wrong, I've seen plenty of rods without winding or cork checks.
I am not sure about  , the trim ring - some reel seats come with the ability to upload or down load - perhaps the extra part is not needed with one method.
You might check with the site online of you bought it there - alot of sites like mud hole have instructions.
Luck,
Rich Mac
