Johnson Century reel

Question
Marc,

How do I tighten the tension on my Johnson  Century 100B reel?  At #6 it still won't reel in a large sunfish.

Answer
Hi Art,

Thats one of those old green ones I believe?

There is a drag number indicator on the top of the reel.  It points to the drag number.  Under that is a flange with the numbers on it.  Get two fingers under that flange and lift it up.  Both items are on a spring.  Once you have it lifted, you can rotate the lever around beyond the highest number and return to #1 again.  You now have a new #1 starting point which will be one full turn tighter than it was.  If that's not enough, do it again till you get it to a range that you need.

You can also adjust this from the inside with a screw driver if you wish.

If that doesn't do it, your spool retainer clip has come off.

Those were tough reels.  We used to reverse the handle and use them under the rod like a spinning reel for winter steelhead fishing.

Good fishing,

Marc
