what are the best top water lures for pike and large mouth bass

Hi Pete,

I have a few favorites that I wouldn't be without.

The first is a buzz bait.  They are great Bass and Pike lures for most of the season.  There are a million of them on the market.  If I had to go with one it would be a single prop, 3/8th ounce and probably yellow or chartreuse.

Second is a side to side, walk the dog type bait.  The most popular is the old Heddon Zara Spook.  Still a great bait.  Better yet, is a lure sold mostly in the salt-water market called the Mirrolure Top Dog.  It's the easiest and noisiest side-to-side type bait out there and indestructable.  

Third would be a prop bait like the Heddon Torpedo.  Unfortunately, the Heddon quality has been a little suspect these days.  I still like the Smithwick Devil Horse.  Can't go wrong there!

Poppers are better Bass lures, but I'd always have one along.  Storms Chug is my favorite.

Last is the crawler type lure.  Here, you have to go with either a Heddon Crazy Crawler or the good old Arbogast Jitterbug.

That is a pretty good selection of topwaters.  If I had to pick just one.... the Buzz bait!
