Hurrocks-Ibbotson fly rod

Question

Hurrocks-Ibbotson
What is the value of a bamboo Hurrocks-Ibbotson fly/casting rod. The reel mount is below the cork handle. There are no marks on the metal. The diameter is 7/16" and the metal is chrome plated brass. The lengths of the 4 pieces are: 33.5",34.75",34.5",25.5". The overall length is 92' or 101". The rectangular label says "Hurrocks-Ibbotson Co. UTICA, N.Y. MADE IN U.S.A." There is a diamond in the center of the label with H-I. The words "Spinner" and "Tonkin Cane" are written in gold-colored script on the handle.

Answer
Kristine,

That's Horrocks  not Hurrocks.

Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook -Michael Sinclair  establishes the H-I label was used in the 50s . The rod was ranking  6 of 8 , one being the best , costing  $15  then.

If you want , I can increase their value by 400% by restoring . You can offer a 20 % off discount as my contribution to your non profit.

Price Book:Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book

Homel gives the 8.5 Horrocks - Ibbotson  model Spinner with an extra tip, 3 sections a value of  $20, 55 and $95 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.

Looking at your pictures you sent via e-mail the rod is in poor condition because , broken tip , label is cracked and torn , finish and thread are sluffing off.

Still I would try for at least $75 and if you get $60 you should be happy.

Luck,
Mac
