Identifying & Valuing Vintage Martin Fly Rods: Fiberglass vs. Bamboo

Question

martin 3017 fly rod
Hi there i recently got this old fly rod from my grandfather an old martin 3017 fly rod and i was wondering if it would be worth anything and if it is a bamboo fly rod or not it looks like it's wrapped in bamboo but I'm not possitive any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks Chris

Answer
Hi Chris,

I am not aware of Martin making or marketing bamboo rods.  This rod is definitely fiberglass painted a color similar to a light or blond bamboo.  The wrapping you see is a by-product of the process involved in making the fiberglass blank.  You will see the same sort of spiraling on graphite blanks that have not been thoroughly sanded smooth.

The rod won't have any real collector value, but it should be a good rod for fishing.  Take it out fishing and think about your grandfather every time you use it.

Thanks,  Joe
