2 Pc Fly Rod
2 Pc Fly Rod
I have a bamboo fly rod that I need to sell for someone and was hoping you could give me an idea on the value. I spoke with Orvis and this is the information I was given.
Serial #14969
8'
2 pc
Ferrel size 13
4.5 oz
Made 10-12-1953 sold 04-02-1954
Makers: Calvin Skinner and George Reid

The rod itself seems to be in pretty good condition. It looks like a few of the wraps have been redone. The "Orvis Impregnated" is wearing off as pictured in the photo. Hope I have provided enough information. Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Sarah,
The rod was built by a well known maker, Orvis who has been around since the US civil war.
The Serial #14969 is in my database I down loaded some years ago. Usually Orvis rods are not in my list. Your information was sufficient and I confirm it.

According to Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000), the 8 ft model Model "Manchester"   doesn't have an extra tip valued at  $90, 190 and $335 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. You might search eBay for prices on Orvis bamboo fly rod.

A cursory examination of the picture leads me to guess less than good , more than poor. I would say fair condition - maybe $120. I state my condition because the first picture shows broken finish, the 2nd is too blurry and you said "it looks like a few of the wraps have been redone".

Orvis is still in business and can help you as well as history:
