spin casting

Question
I have fished for years I'm quite the amatuer,I wanted to know when using open bale spin casting rod ,when retrieving the lure should the reel be set so it dosen't make the clicking sound as this may travel down the line to the fish?
Thanks Bruce
PS have caught some but now I'm hooked on this Q!

Answer
You hear arguments on both sides of this one.  I personally have watched whales as we reeled in halibut with the "clicker" on turn as they got close to the boat, but when we stoped reeling while the whales were approaching, they would come up right beside the boat!  I do believe that the sound is transmitted down the line and into the water where i do believe that the fish do hear it or at least feel the vibrations from the sound on their lateral lines.  I do not think that it ALWAYS makes a difference to the fish however.  I'm sure you will get about a 50/50% of people you ask if it makes a difference to the fish...
