Valuing Vintage Fishing Rods: Ike Walton & Kingfisher Bamboo

Question
Hi, I have a five foot Ike Walton fiberglass 1 piece rod it still has all the guides and even the original price tag on it.  Do you have an idea of its worth.  I also am seeking the same information about a kingfisher bamboo 5' rod.  Again, the guides are in great shape.  Thanks

Answer
Earl,
I am a bamboo fly rod man ,one reason is fiberglass just isn't collected like bamboo.
I have tried to sell fiberglass and or spin rods with little to no success.
I believe the Ike Walton is a fiberglass rod which is not bamboo. It is a spin rod and therefor not collectible by most peoples standards. There isn't even a book dedicated on spin or fiberglass, due to the lack of interest.

Horrocks-Ibbotson Co. made an Ike Walton Bamboo rod and odds are good that your rod was made by them. They have a poor reputation among collectors, so to get more than 10 for it you would need to prove it is not H-I.

Short rods like your Kingfisher 5 footers are spin / casting rods. Most Kingfisher rods were trade rods made by Montague - different company same poor quality.

Be wary of people saying your fiberglass rod is worth thousands unless they back it up with cash.
luck,
Mac
