Hardy bamboo

Question
Hi Mac,

I have a 1920 Hardy Brothers 9'1/2" bamboo fly rod. Serial # on rod butt end is C6525 It has the original canvas bag (not a tube), aluminum wedge, and silver rod plug. Rod is perfectly straight and finish is perfect with no cracks. Cork may have been sanded at one time. Ferrules and whippings are in great condition also. Rod is in excellent shape.

Please could you give me a price quote?

Kind regards,

Joseph

Answer
Joseph,
Hardy is English, as I am an America US bamboo fly rod guy it is a little bit off my radar but I will do my best.

Resale value depends allot on model and condition. If the handle has been changed allot from sanding the cork handle, it  is not in excellent condition.

Price Book:
Antique & Collectible  Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel mentions 3 - 9 and 1/2 foot bamboo fly rod model:
"Gold Medal" salmon fly rod
"Hollokona Salmon Deluxe" fly rod
"Halford Knockabout' fly rod

I have a database from  by Hardy and Grays of Canada and another source that confirms both.
They confirm your serial number C6525  was made in 1920.
So other models could be Halford Dry Fly or Fairchild

Homel gives 9 1/2 bamboo fly rods with an extra tip, 3 sections the  average values of  $69, 157 and $275 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. So 300 seems about right  as a guesstimate.

Luck,
Mac
