Identifying Your 1977 Orvis Midge Bamboo Fly Rod: Serial Number & Specs

Question

Orvis Midge Bamboo Fly
I have the above fly rod, serial # 80424-R, Wt: 3 5/8 oz., 2 sections, 7 1/2 ft overall length.  Reel seat is below the cork handle.  H.E.G. 5, one tip.  I can't find any info on it.  All the sites I have found list the "R" as the prefix and mine is a suffix.  Would you know what that means?  I have attached a photo showing the two pieces with matching serial numbers.  The shape is 6 sided.  What does H.E.G. mean? Any info you could give me would be appreciated.  Thank you!

Answer
Greg,
I don't have the answers but I know how to find them so . . .
You can find the Orvis serial number Database at
http://mysite.verizon.net/vze2h7gi/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/orvis.htm

Orvis has and continues to make quality fly rods, yes they are still making bamboo rods.
The serial number list  is not all inclusive. Most of the Orvis rods I have heard about are not in it.

I have heard if you call Orvis 888-235-9763, they have a non digital , paper source with more complete serial numbers.  I have also heard that if you ask for a value they will put you off but if you ask for age, maker, and model then you will get some help. They will know that the R means, my guess is it was a serial number or quality change related to a date. H.E.G. could be the maker.

Value: Price Book: Antique & Collectible  Fishing Reels: Identification, Evaluation & Maintenance Homel, & Jellison. 1996.
Homel gives the Orvis "Midge" fly rod 7 1/2' , 2 sections the  value of  $150, 350 and $600 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.

Luck,
Mac

Please provide feedback, nominations are appreciated.
