Identifying and Repairing Your McGill-Wright Fly Rod (GaMU-75)
Question
I have a MW rod unknown year by is marked as GaMU-75 on rod and Eagle Claw on handle. the Rod is in 4 sections and I broke the tip. Can it be replaced
Answer
Hi Mike -- I had to do some digging on this one. I'm fond of fiberglass -- I often fly fish with an old Shakespeare Wonder-rod.
If you still have the tip pieces, you should be able to mic them for diameter and get a replacement tip section that will at least be close to right. You'll need to move your tip-top and a guide or two to the new blank section, wrap them, and finish the wraps. This can be done at home; I build rods and have used a wrapping stand built from a cardboard box, with a sewing machine thread tensioner. Be sure to measure the guide spacing before you remove them from the broken section!
Winston,Diamondback,Scott, and Lamiglass all make fiberglass rods and sell blanks. You might also check out the fiberglass fly rodders forum here:
