brining baits

2016/7/15 10:23:04

Question
your thoughts on whether or not to brine strips of squid used flounder fishing. ie; making them tougher for the bait thieves and to perserve for several days fishing.

Answer
I brine offshore baits a lot! There are times when you can't get fresh bait and the success of companies like Calcutta is a testament to how these brined baits work.

Use salt and baking soda (the salt preserves the meat, while the baking soda preserves the color). It works for me, in fact I have a few brined baits in the freezer now.

This is a matter of preference, some people don't like it (or believe in them, depends on how you look at it really) some, like using lures when they can't find fresh bait. End of the day, it's still up to the fish. For me, it's a matter of presenting to the fish a few more choices.

thanks for asking,

Kit
