Reshafting older irons

Question
I have a set of Callaway Big Bertha irons that is approximately 10 years old (bought used from a friend).  They have the standard RCH 96 graphite shafts (R flex).  I play to a 4-7 hcp typically but am wondering if these shafts degrade over time?  I still hit my 8 iron 145-150 yds.  I'm 62 yrs old and obviously not one to buy new equipment very often.  My wife was given a set of Callaway X-12 irons (which she doesn't use), which are probably newer than mine, and I have thought of reshafting those. I have also considered steel shafts but have hit mostly graphite for the past 20 years. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
Steve,

If you are seeing inconsistencies with your irons, I would consider reshafting them. If not, keep them the way they are and continue to play to your 4-7 handicap. You can try reshafting your 8 iron and see if there is a difference in distance, trajectory, etc. If not have the original shaft put back in the 8 iron. This will cost you a few dollars but it should answer your question.

Steel shafts are usually more consistent from shaft to shaft within the set make up. You can also get lightweight steel shafts that are comparable to the weight of graphite shafts.

Good luck and thanks for the question.

Michael
