Golf Rules: Water Well as Immovable Obstruction - Free Relief?

Question
Hello i was wondering if u can answer a question for me? My buddy and i where teeing off on a 18th hole which had water to the left of it.  When he teed off his ball rolled and landed in a waterwell.  So i was wondering since he had to play another ball and it was condider a unplayable ball would he have to take a stroke penalty?

Answer
Hi Juan,

I would think the water well would be considered an immovable obstruction and you would get free relief. Since it is not practical to retrieve the ball, you would drop another one at a point no closer to the hole than the well and in a position so that the well does not interfere with your stance or swing (no penalty).

There might be something on the scorecard clarifying a local rule to deal with the water well.

Hope this helps.
