club lie for shorter players

Question
Eddie:

I'm 5,5" and not the shortest guy ever to play golf, but probably more like the size and shape of Ian Woosnam.  I read in one of your postings that you have different lie angles in certain clubs.  That sounds like a great idea - can a pro do that for me and what is he looking for as he watches he hit different clubs?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Bill:

Yes he can Bill, and that is what he is looking at.....you hitting golf balls.  He will be checking the lie of your irons AT IMPACT when you are actually hitting golf balls.  It doesn't matter if it's outdoors (better if possible) or indoors, because he will put a piece of tape on the sole of your club and watch you hit balls.  A mark will be made when you strike the surface he has you hit off.  You want all the marks to be in the middle of the clubface.  It's easy to do.  I have 3 different lie angles in my set of irons.  I am 5'2" Bill.  My wedges up to a 9 iron are 4 degrees flat, my 6-8 iron are 3 degrees flat and my 4 and 5 iron are 2 degrees flat.  I play standard length clubs.  I then have 2 hyrids I use depending on the wind and the length of the course I am playing.  One is a 19 degree and one is a 25 degree.  But any good clubmaker or repairman can fit your irons for you.  Important to get it done.  At 150 yards, if the lie angle of your club is one degree off, the ball is 17-20 feet offline, all no fault of you.  Get them checked and bent to what they should be, then you have one less variable to worry about.
