senior tee boxes

Question
I read a question earlier that you had responded too about senior tee boxes, but my question is.....what is the formula for figuring where to place the closer boxes.  I am the president of a small 9-hole course and this is a real issue for some of the members.  How many feet in front of the regular boxes do we set the closer boxes for seniors or those needing to play up due to handicaps?

Answer
hello ronnie.  i am sorry that i don't have any formula to help you out and i doubt there is one...  if there is, then i am mistaken.  if this golf course is small 9 holes, then the foward tees shouldn't be TOO far from the back tees.  tees are designed accordingly to the golf course.  there is no specific rule in which you follow to determine the distances.  you cannot just place them in random places where they are closer to the hole.  if its dogleg,  place the tee box accordingly so that they can play the dogleg.  everyone enjoys a litle challenge.  keep a thought in mind that you shouldn't place the tee boxes too far from the back tees that the seniors won't play them.  they too, have a little sense of pride and they too, enjoy a challenge.  i saw many cases in which older players completely ignore foward tees because they were ridiculously far from the back tees.  and i understood that.  so avoid spending money for new tee boxes that NO ONE will use.  chances are, its not going to be too appealing for any golfers.  so my final answer is, try to minimize the distance between the back tees and the foward tees.  include challenges.  if there is a lake on a par 3, make sure that the foward tees have to go across the lake.
it should be JUST short enough to give them couple yards advantage per hole.  if its aganist the wind, place it couple more yard foward.  i hope i was able to plant some new ideas...  if you have further questions or would like to talk more about it, feel free to ask me.  i would love to share anything that i have to offer.
