Too Shallow

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I have been playing for over 40 years...have been a 5 or less hcp most of the last 35 years. However of late I suffer with what I believe to bea too shallow swing path resulting in many fat shots and some bladed shots. My divots always slant to the right when I take one. My teeball is fine..........nice trajectory and usually over 270 yds, but put a wedge in my hand and I may chilly dip it. I;m not "flipping" at it.......just hitting behind it.
Can you help? I'm really frustrated now!

ANSWER: thanks for the question steve.  i think i know what you are going through and i am sure that i can help you with your problem.  lets get ONE thing straight.  if you are hitting your drives fine, then your swing path is fine.  if your divots are pointing out to the right, then obviously it means you have shallow swing path but NOT TOO shallow.  this is not the cause that you are hitting chunky shots.  so work on your tempo instead.  get your legs together and try to hit balls that way.  this will force you to slow down and make better contacts.  also, count 1 and then 2 when you are swinging.  count "one" when you are going back and "two" when you are hitting the ball.  keep it simple.  also, make sure there is no dipping motion with your body.  you may be pushing your body DOWN as you are hitting the ball.  this may be caused because you lost a little bit of flexibility.  perhaps you could try shorter backswing which will put less pressure on your back and force you to make easier swing....  one IMPORTANT THING.  keep practicing that driver although it may not be your problem.  this is crucial because as soon as you get your irons back, you will lose that driver of yours.  don't let this happen and make sure to stay sharp with your game.  another thing to acknowlede is the fact that the problem will eventually get away.  don't be TOO frustrated.  remember, its part of a game.  i too, am going through a period in which i can't seem to hit to the ball...  but be patient and one day, it will just start to click.  i hope the best of luck and if you have further questions, just let me know...

QUESTION: I think you hit it right on the button. Especially the part about losing some flexibility which I have been working on by stretching. I was always a solid iron player......I hope to get back to that and keep the driver going. Thanks for your help

Answer
great!!!!!  my friends are currently stretching every night for 30 minutes.  it seems to be working for them.
i think you are not making the proper turn on the backswing which causes an awkward downswing.  obviously, that will lead to a poor contact.  driver is a little more forgiving since the ball is on the tee...
meanwhile, since you can't just increase the flexibilty in a few days, you should make your backswing a little more compact.  make a nice, lateral movement with your body.  don't dip up and down during the swing.  one thing that really helps is to extend your arms at the moment of impact.
so in an essence, there are two things you should start working on your swing.  better lateral movemnet and better extension.  try to swing a little faster on the impact but be careful to not make any jerking movements.
