Chips vs. Pitches: Understanding the Key Differences in Golf
Question
What is the basic difference between a pitch and a chip ? Is a long chip distinctly different from a short pitch ?
Answer
Hi Neil,
A chip is typically a short shot where the ball is on the fringe (also called apron) of the green. The ball is hit with a short stroke (with any iron or hybrid) in which there is no significant wrist break. The ball has a short carry and long roll.
A pitch is a longer shot (10 - 90 yards) which requires a longer swing and uses a wedge. The ball has a long carry and very short roll. There is significant wrist break.
Hope this helps.
