Answer
Hi Chad, and thanks for your question.

My answer is NO WAY did you start too late!  I really like your enthusiam and taking a realistic view on things.  I stopped playing for 8 years when I went to college, and got back into the game in 1994.  Started playing again, got my game in shape, and by 1999 was elected into the PGA of America as a member.

I like the fact you recognize your weaknesses.  The short game, in my opinion, is the most important.  Always get better in that area.

At 22, you have a long time to improve.  Beginning to take lessons is a great step towards that.  Be selective in the pro you choose.  I feel that you have to have a good relationship with your pro, especially if you are willing to work hard at achieving your goals.  Have a plan, and have the pro work with you to get to where you are going.  Set goals, and work on one area at a time.

Check out PGA.com and look at the info on the GPTP (golf professional training program).  This will give you a good idea what you will need to prepare for.

First step is to improve your game to where you can consistently shoot in the mid-70's so you can pass your playing ability test, the first step to getting into the PGA.

I like your enthusiam, and if there is anything I can help you with, please ask!  You can accomplish anything you set your mind to.  As the PGA says, plan your work, work your plan!  Good luck.

Sincerely,

Rick Williams
