ladies irons vs mens

Question
hi,

I am looking to buy a set of golf clubs for my wife, a newcomer to golf. Do you think it is worthwhile buying women's clubs for her vs buying men's clubs? Is there really a difference? She is about the same height as me and therefore could use regular sized clubs.

thanks

Answer
Hello,

in answering your question, I will point out that not only is it the size difference,  but the weight and flex that are more important. Men's clubs are heavier and have stiffer shafts.  You did not mention her height, I would say if she is 5'6" or more she could "fit" a mens club, and she could always choke up a half inch if it made her more comfortable. If she is athletic this is fine.

However if she is not strong enough to flex the shaft on her downswing, she will be losing distance, same for the weight,  if she is not strong enough to swing the weight with adequate speed, etc etc....  If she is tall, she could use a men's Senior set and have the same characteristics as ladies only with a longer shaft.

The dangers in having too long of clubs (no matter the flex) are increased weight and the lie of the club changes,  the toe of the club will be off the ground, picture it if it were 2 feet too long for example,  the toe would be way off the ground forcing all shots to go left.  So the longer clubs have to be flatter.

I hope this helps,  if you want to write back with more specifics, feel free doing so, I enjoy talking about golf.  see my website at walkersgolfventures.com

Have an awesome day

Kim
