Buying skiis

2016/7/22 11:06:20

Question
I am 5'8" (140lbs) and my husband is 6'0" tall.(190 lbs) Is the relation of a persons height to ski length an accurate one? We will probably ski 1-2 times a year and have no need for anything other than "recreational" type equipment. What length range should we be considering? Thanks!

Answer
Hello Wendy,

Yes, there is a general rule for length of ski to height of person, but with today's sidecut technology, weight, and agressiveness plays an important part as well.

Here is my key reccommendation, and I use it on myself at times.

Buy the best 4 buckle boots you possibly can. From a boot fitter. with orthotics.

Rent skis wherever you go, prefferably at the mountain base so you can try different ones on the same day. The rent shop will size your skis with a target height. Your husband will want 177-178-180 skis to start with, and depending on the flex, the terrain, he will want to choose different ones. write the details of the ski you like down in a safe place! that way, you can get the same ski next time, or in the event you go to another area, you can tell them "I really liked the Fischer XBR 150 cm last time, what do you have with similar sidecut and flex?" and dont have to start all over again.

After you find your dream ski, which should take about 5-6 different tryouts, be on the prowl on ebay for used ones.

I rent all the time, lugging my skis around are a pain, and I can choose the ski for the condition of the day. Powder, groomers, steeps...  hope this helps.
