Question
I got my board at the beginning of last year and haven't sharpened it once.  It still works really well though, how often do you need to sharpen it

Answer
The frequency that you sharpen you're edges depends on the type of riding that you do, and how you want you're board to perform.  If you are not hitting any rails, rocks, or any objects other than snow, you will only rarely need to sharpen you're edges.  Snow does not have much of an ability to dull you're edges.  However, if you ride on ice very often, you should sharpen them occasionally.

If you like to ride park and slide on rails and boxes, then you will probably want to keep your edges a little dull, but rails cause a lot of damage to you're edges, so you should take the burrs out as explained below...

An important thing that you should do is remove the burrs from the edge.  These are small scrapes on the edge that will occur throughout the use of you're board.  If you leave them, they will tend to get a little worse.  You should take a diamond stone and lightly drag it along the base and side of your edge to remove these snags.

A good way to check the sharpness of the edge is to lightly scrape the surface of you're fingernail on it.  If a little bit of shaved nail appears on the edge, they are sharp enough.

You don't want to sharpen your edges too much though, eventually you will run out of edge.

If you are completely satisfied with the way you're board performs, then there is little that you need to do other than remove the burrs.  However, I personally try to keep my edges sharp and smooth because it helps a lot when the snow conditions are not ideal.  Usually I will shapen the edges about once for every 20 days of riding.  Sharp edges can make the difference between sliding uncontrollably down an icy hill, or carving across it with little effort.

I don't know how many days yoy ride during the year, but I would say that sharpening you're edges would be a good idea, and would help you're riding on ice and hardpack greatly.
