stomach distention after swimming

Question
Hi. My 4 yr old began swimming underwater recently.  Every time she does, she ends up with abdominal distention and pain.  It only happens after swimming underwater.  She appears to be swallowing air.  How can we stop this?  Thank you for your time and help.

Answer
Kim--
Your daughter is probably swallowing air.  The best thing to do is to keep her from swimming underwater so much.  Try to teach her to swim on top of the water(swim lessons?).  Other than that teach her to blow bubbles when her face is in the water, that'll get her to breath rather than swallow the air.
Hope this helps,
George
