Time out of pool

2016/7/15 11:58:26

Question
Is there ever an acceptable reason (other than injury) for high level (free-styler with Junior National cuts from 50 to 200 free) 17 year old h.s. junior to take three months (April through June)out of pool (land-based training only)before returning to pool for intensive training for nine months? I have great respect for and trust of coach (backed by significant quantifiable improvements over several years), but I am questioning what seems like a long time for my son to be out of the pool heading into his senior year.

Answer

You're right,  That does seem like a long period to be out of the water.  The dryland is good, but it isn't enough, eapecially going into his senior year.  April through June is typically a big yardage training time in preparation for summer nationals.  I can see taking a week or two, but 3 months is too long, he'll lose too much valuable training time prior to his senior year.  Take a mont or two after his senior year, before starting at whatever college he's going to.
Hope this helps,
George
