swim - beginner

Question
Hi Kate

I have problem keeping my feet above water.  My instructor suggested that I kick harder, but it helps little and I just get tire sooner.  Also I have difficulty holding my breath long enough for more than 3 or 4 strokes.  Any tips on kicking will be appreciated.  I tried to practice as much as I could but seem to gain very little from the daily 30 min work out I do in the pool.

Rgds,
henry

PS. I always find it hard to recover (pull legs up to chest position) with fins on, as the extra drag makes it very hard to do it quick enough for me to stand up and get air.  Perhaps I need to work on my leg muscle?

Answer
Hi Henry. Your feet when you kick should be under water. If your instructor is teaching you to kick above water they are doing it incorrectly.  If you kick under water you should easily be able to move.

Why are you wearing fins? I am just curious.

Good luck I would talk to your instructor about their technique.
