Sneezing after swimming

2016/7/15 11:59:54

Question
This is a bizarre question, but I would really appreciate your help.  I have avoided swimming because after I swim, I sneeze a lot and have a runny nose.  It's almost like I have caught a cold for 1/2 day.  This happens in many different pools, during many different seasons.  It doesn't matter if its the pool at school during spring, an outside pool at the Y during summer, or the gym in the middle of winter.  Do you have any suggestions on what I can do to fix or mitigate this problem?  I def. would like to get in the pool more often, but the downtime from being "sick" is not worth it!  THANK YOU!

Answer
Not such a bizarre question.  It is very possible you are allergic to the chlorine in the pool.  Public pools tend to use a lot of cleaning chemicals and chlorine is one of the strongest and causes a lot of reactions in people.  If it is a concern talk to your doctor and see what he says.  Hope this helps,
George
