Can I float?

2016/7/15 12:00:40

Question
Hello,

I am very sad to have to ask you this question.  My girlfriend and I got into an argument about whether or not I can float.  I could float when I was younger, so I know how to, but I just can't now.  I work out a lot but don't eat much and my percent body fat is between 3 and 5, closer to 3.6%.  Could you please let her in on how much denser I am because of this....and that I just may not be able to float?  But mayble I'm wrong...Thanks  EG--

Answer
Erik,
Well I would actually have to see you in order to make that call.  However, people with less body fat, thicker muscles, and/or uneven weight distribution have a more difficult time floating.  You are not far off.

Floating in the water is something that requires relaxation.  You might be tensing your muslces which would make you sink.

For the sake of the arguement, I would say that it's more difficult for people of your build to float...it's not impossible though.  Some people are able to float more easily.  I do believe that with time and practice you would be able to be somewhat buouyant in the water.  I am not saying that you would be floating on top of the water, but at least you wouldn't sink straight down.

I realize I didn't settle your bet 100%.  I have learned that there are no absolutes in life and that you should NEVER argue with a woman!  :-)

It is feasible that you aren't a floating man.  It is also feasible that you just aren't doing it correctly.  Overall, you do have a better point than her though...just don't tell her I said that.

I am sorry for the later reply.  I was in Las Vegas celebrating my birthday.  I hope you didn't get too mad at my tardiness.

Good luck.
Eric
