Question
is swimming a worldwide sport?
how many laps is a thousand?
how many laps is a eight hundred?

Answer
Chelsea,
Yes, swimming is very much a world-wide sport.  It is one of the original sports that has been in the Olympics since it has been brought back to life.

Swimming consists of three types of venues:  long course meters, short course meters, and short course yards.  The United States is the main country that uses yards.  Also, laps in swimming are considered to be one length of the pool.  So 2 laps means up and back (or 2 lengths).

1000 yards is 40 lengths (or laps) in short course yards.
800 meters is 16 lengths (or laps) in long course meters.
800 meters is 32 lengths (or laps) in short course meters.

The 1000 is only swum in short course meters.

I hope this helps.  Good luck and swim hard.
Eric
