How Does A Natural Swimming Pond Works?

2016/7/21 15:25:43

A natural swimming pond is a system that consists of an engineered body of water by which the water is isolated in a concrete membrane. It does not undergo a process of disinfecting or sterilizing with the use of chemicals instead clarifying the water simply through the aid of organic filters and foliage especially embedded deep into the pond.

What is the concept behind natural swimming pond?
The concept is very basic which is to generate a swimming zone within a hollow out area of the pond. It should be huge and cavernous enough in order to cater the swimming needs of the customers. Around the allotted swimming zone is where the planted regeneration zone located. Since it has two designated zones (deep central swimming zone and shallow regeneration zone), the only thing that separates both zones is a sunken wall which allows the water from flowing between them.

The sunken wall should be 300 mm below the water surface in order to effectively permit the water from flowing. Furthermore, the shallow regeneration zone of the natural swimming pond is filled with appropriate aggregate in order to allow the good bacteria present in the water surface to have a lot of clinging spaces. These bacteria are responsible for maintaining the pure and clear water in the swimming zone. They are able to putrefy several organic matters thereby emitting nitrates and phosphates.

The substances which the bacteria emit are necessary to sustain the foliage or plant life inside the pond. In addition, these are beneficial also in blending the pond with the nature somehow a natural dew pond nestling in its own environment. Generally, plants which dwell in deeper water are used in sustaining natural swimming pond such as lilies and those plants mostly living in boundaries and swamp areas. On the other hand, the perforated pipes which are found beneath the shallow regeneration zone draw the water with the use of pump and eventually return purer and clearer water to the swimming zone.

For additional equipments used in maintaining an ecological pond include skimmers for removing the leaves and debris, filters for picking finest particles and UV filters for added precaution. The bacteria which are working in the regeneration zone are aerobic so oxygen is very essential for them. That is why plants are rooted into the pond since they help in channeling oxygen via their roots in order to sustain these bacteria. Moreover, for additional aeration a waterfall or fountain can be of great help as well.

Always keep in mind, that the size of the filter area is equivalent to the size of the swimming zone which in fact, should be 50 percent of the total area. Furthermore, the aggregate should not exceed pH above 7.5 so never use limestone materials instead use gravels, clays or pumice (known to be pH neutral) since they are handy enough to do the job in order to maintain the appropriate number of bacteria into the pond.
