Forward Hand Offs

Question
While behind the line of scrimmage, how many times can the offence LEGALLY hand the ball FORWARD to an eligible player during one play? I've seen it handed forward ONCE many times during one play behind the line of scrimmage, but never twice or more and I'm wondering if that is simply because, while LEGAL, it doesn't make sense to do it, or is it because it's illegal?

Answer
I do not believe the rule books even touch this one.  I simply think there just are not many instances where it may come into play.  I believe as long as you were to make the handoffs behind the line of scrimmage then you could make as many as you prefer.  Actually I have indeed seen the ball handed off forward more than once.  Team is in a shotgun set.  Ball is snapped to the QB who hands the ball off forward to a receiver running a jet sweep.  The receiver then hands the ball off forward to another receiver coming from the opposite direction on a counter/inside reverse.

Hope I was a help.
