Bump n run

Question
Hi coach, I play CB in a 4-6 defence.  I'm expected to bump the reciever at the line with only one safety back.  Just wanted to ask any tips specifically to do with bump n run like positioning, who should I look at (reciever or QB).  I'ts NCAA so we can bump more than 5 yards downfield by the way.

Answer
Well Kal in most bump and run situations you don't want the receiver to beat you immediately to the inside.  The purpose of the bump is to disrupt the routs and give your d-line time to put pressure on the qb.  So how we teach our kids to bump, is to take away the inside release by positioning your body on the inside hip of the receiver.  Strike the receiver with both hand into his chest.  Do not let the receiver get vertical on you!  Hold up the receiver as long as possible.  One major mistake many db's do on the bump coverage is go for an all out hit on the receiver coming off the line.  If you miss and the receiver beats you clean, he will be wide open.  So hit the receiver firmly without over extending.
