Split-Gap Defense for 7-8 Grade Football: Gap Assignment Strategies

Question
I am in the Navy and have coached youth football for 4 years. I am now taking over the 7th and 8th grade division. I am interested in running a split six defense. I understand this is the early version of the 4-4. I am specifically interested in how the gap assignments are delegated.

The formation I am refering to has the two linebackers over the inside eye of the guards with the DT' on the outside I.

Answer
Dear Mark Baxley,
It is nice to meet a fellow coach. It is not easy to start a new defense without doing a little reading about it first.
You are going to need more than just gap control. This is just some of what you are going to need;

?  Defensive Fronts
?  Communication System
?  Coverage Calls
?  Changing Coverage
?  Blitzes
?  Pass Rush Technique
?  Types of Pass Rush Technique
?  Block Schemes vs. Alignment / Technique
?  Linebacker Play
?  Loop End and Rover Back Play
?  Safety and Cornerback Play

Try reading (FOOTBALL'S SUPER SPLIT) the underdog defense.

This is a great book on defense.
(I have it in my collection)
Before you ask, NO, I do not get any money for pushing the book.
If you have any more questions please let me know.
Your friend, coach Louis

Ps.  I am sure this is not the only good book out there. This is just a book I read and I liked.
